Building Typology

1.     Which building typology you are researching?

The type of building typology that I will be researching this semester will be a Full Service Hotel. A Full Service Hotel is a Hotel that contains a full service accommodation, in addition the hotel can also contain a restaurant. As well in a full service hotel there can be a variety of amenities such as swimming pools, gym, children activities, saunas and tanning butler etc.
2.     Why are you researching this building typology?
The reason why I would like to research a Full Service Hotel building typology is because as we study the site of Red Hook in Brooklyn, New York we noticed that there where no Hotel’s near by our given Sites. Most of the Hotels are located in downtown Manhattan.  And after the hurricane Sandy affecting Red Hook really bad its now going to start to progress and more people will be visiting the Red Hook area and a great facility that should be built around the area should be a Hotel. So that people that visit the site if they wish to stay a couple of days around the area they can have a place to stay at the Hotel. Therefore, that is one of the main reasons why I believe that designing a Hotel located in the Red Hook area will be a successful building typology to design.
3.     What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research i.e.   museum for dance, school for digital media…
The specialty that I would be providing in designing a Full Service Hotel in Red Hook is that it will be a place that will have a little bit of everything that will have my customers of all ages be encourage to want to stay in the Hotel. As well I would like to have my Hotel be handicapped accessible.

My goal for working with this building is that I would want people to enjoy their stay at the hotel. And by achieving that goal I want to provide the people a place where they can experience a little bit of everything that the hotel will offer. For example the hotel will have a full service that will provide a swimming pool, saunas, tanning butler and a gym to do exercise while staying at the hotel. As well it will have a variety of children activities. In addition it will have restaurant/cafe, provided to the customers that stay in the Hotel.
6.   What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building? (may  evolve once more research is done)
The programs that I will include in my building typology facility as of now are the following Lobby, Customer Service, Check-In Area, Restrooms, Gym, Swimming Pool Area, Tanning Area, Sauna Area, Game room, Laundry Room, Mechanical Room, Restaurant/Café, Kitchen, Storage, Loading dock, Rooms Occupancy (Single, Double, and Suite).

  1. Hello Cindy,

Good job so far. I have though a couple of concerns:

In regards to your 10 first building references I would try to be more selective. Why these buildings? It could be helpful to write down why you chose each of them. The selection of your precedents should be a deeply thoughtful process. They are after all a source of inspiration for you or maybe rejection. In any case you chose them for some reason. I am not convinced that all of your examples have a straightforward interest so you may need to make that more explicit with a text.
These buildings should present interest in regards to aspects like their architectural quality, their innovation and uniqueness on materiality / structure / concept / programmatic manifesto, design, neatness of interior detailing etc. The architect, the location, the age of the selected buildings could also be driving factors for you to chose them.

Also, in a few of those you haven’t mentioned the name of the architect/s. Please do so.

  2. The building typology you have chosen is challenging and I think that you should shape a more rigorous argument of why you chose it and relate it to your site and the city.

    What is your programmatic manifesto?
The functions you are mentioning so far seem complete but follows the path of any conventional building of this kind. Be rigorous about your program. Think what difference will your hotel offer in New York city. What is unique about your proposal?
