CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT COLLAGES

At this point we already know what we are going to design and now its time for us to start our Design. Therefore, we were asked to make three collages: One board was about our impression of the Site. Another board was about a word that we needed to pick from a list that best describes our site. And the last board is a board that explains our program of spaces that our building typology will consist of in our design.

IMPRESSION OF SITE: DEPRESSION
My first impression of the site was that it was a depressing site because I was still able to see all of the disaster that Hurricane Sandy had done in Red Hook. It was a depressing feeling of seeing how the streets that had been flooded where still affected. As well it was a dark rainy day the first time I visited the site 68 Ferris St, in Brooklyn. I noticed the streets and houses, and warehouses around the area were destroyed as well as while we walked there were areas where it felt scary to continue to walk. The area seemed sad and very depressing as well in some cases while we were walking there where areas in which I was able to see some light. Overall in Red Hook it was a site that had a happy feeling as we reached the Valentino Park next to our site and having the nice view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline were pleasing views that made the site have hopes and feel happy. So that’s why in my collage I mainly tried to express my feelings of the site being depressing, dark, and  sad, as well the site being destroyed therefore I put some images in which light will shine and cast a shadow. Because when walking there where some spaces were we would get a nice view and a little light. Therefore in my collage I added a picture which shows a view with a happy and sad face which to me that is what Red Hook felt the first visit. Therefore shade and shadow is also expressed in my collage.

IMPRESSION OF SITE: DEPRESSION

WORD: ISOLATED

The reason why isolated is the word that I decided to use to describe the site is because the site that I researched is site 4 which is further way from the other sites. In addition another reason way isolated is a word that describes the site is because once we reach the site we need to walk at least 20’ in the site in order to get the view of the waterfront which makes the site feel left out (ISOLATED) from the rest of Red Hook.

WORD: ISOLATED

PROGRAM: HOTEL (RELAX)
My program is a Hotel and what I would like for my guest to experience at the stay of the hotel is peace, love and have everything that they could possibly needed to feel like home. I would want to provide my guest with a relaxing stay at the hotel. In addition I would like for them to enjoy the stay at the hotel by providing them with different activities to keep my guest occupied at all times. Some of the programs that my hotel will be providing for the guest at the hotel are a small casino area, swimming pool, nice views of the Manhattan skyline. As well other spaces of my program are a spa, fitness center, a bar, restaurant, and a computer center for those guest that don’t have a laptop with them. In addition other spaces that my hotel will consist of for my guest are a cafĂ©, a game room where people can go and  have different games in which they can play and have a fun time. As well the hotel will also have a terrace and outdoor seating for the guest to enjoy the stay at the hotel and enjoy the views of the Skyline.

 PROGRAM: HOTEL (RELAX, PEACE, LOVE)

  1. That is a good start. A few things:

Consider being less literal with your collages. It is hard to extract a concept out of them. The first two follow the technique of creating a mood board through a grid of images rather really creating an innovative composition. Mood boards are very important for the design process but when you use them as literal references rather conceptual collages.
Look at the collages and ask yourself: Do they make you dream, imagine?

I find the notion of "isolation" you chose very challenging especially having in mind that your program is a hotel. Consider similar words but with more positive connotation such as "retreat" for example.
